Cannabis Testing Extraction of Terpene by GC

Cannabis oil in a bottle.

In Cannabis testing, terpenes are a major source of the aroma found in cannabis plants and extracts. They give cannabis products their distinct flavors and are also responsible for some of the medicinal properties of cannabis. This application will examine the determination of terpenes using solvent extraction and Selective Ion Monitoring (SIM) Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).

The Flex Series autosampler for injection into the GC proved to be an excellent cannabis testing technique for the determination of terpenes. The procedure worked well with all of the solvents tested and dilution of the extracts is easily achieved.
